Who We Are
Plano Community Garden
The Plano Community Garden (PCG) was established in 2007 through a partnership between Junior League of Collin County, the City of Plano's Sustainability division and volunteer Plano Community Gardeners. Today, the garden's 50 raised beds provide over 5,000 pounds of fresh organic produce annually to local food pantries serving Plano families.
The Plano Community Garden is not open to the public. Only volunteers of the garden have access. The process to become a volunteer at the garden is listed below.
What We Do
Volunteer at the Plano Community Garden
Interested volunteers can sign up to participate in monthly garden workdays or adopt a plot upon completing an apprenticeship. A background check is required for all adults (ages 18+).
Monthly Garden Workdays
Volunteers who are only interested in participating at the monthly garden workdays can do so without adopting a plot or becoming an apprentice by signing up for an upcoming garden workday.
Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship provides volunteers with hands-on training and mentorship for up to one year. Apprentices assist mentors with caring for their plots while gaining experience in the garden. We welcome new apprentices in the fall and spring growing seasons.
How to become an apprentice:
- Sign up for an upcoming garden workday.
- Volunteer at a garden workday and let us know you would like to become an apprentice.
- Sustainability staff will pair you with a mentor at the garden.
Adopting a Plot
After completing an apprenticeship, volunteers who have adopted a plot are expected to do the following:
- Care for and cultivate a raised bed (4 ft x 18 ft) year-round.
- Devote three to five hours per week on average to caring for the bed.
- Gather produce weekly in time for the food pantry delivery.
- Report volunteer time and harvest weight weekly through your online volunteer portal.
- Volunteer at the monthly PCG workdays year-round.
- Attend PCG meetings, typically held after monthly workdays.
Plano Community Gardeners (volunteers with an adopted plot) may keep up to half of their harvest while donating the remainder. Donated produce is delivered to local partner food pantries with the primary goal of providing fresh organic produce to Plano families in need.
