Who We Are

Plano Animal Services is committed to partnering with Plano’s citizens, veterinarians, and animal welfare organizations to promote responsible pet ownership and to provide outstanding animal health and welfare and human health protection services.

What We Do

Volunteers enhance the lives of adoptable animals through socialization, cleaning and administrative tasks. Volunteers add an additional layer of care for the future pets in their care.

How to Give Back

IN-SHELTER VOLUNTEERS

Adults can serve in many roles such as greeting visitors, assisting with laundry, exercising and socializing dogs, working in the cat room, photography and adoption counseling. In-shelter volunteering is an long-term commitment that requires extensive training and a minimum of 8 hours per month.

In-shelter volunteers must be 18 or older, complete a screening, attend an orientation and pass animal handling training and complete a background check. After onboarding, volunteers must contribute 8 hours per month (approximately 4 volunteer shifts) on an ongoing basis to remain on the volunteer roster.

Due to the high demand for in-shelter volunteering, individuals may spend 2-4 months on the waitlist prior to receiving an orientation invitation. To join the waitlist, create a volunteer profile and then click here to answer some additional Animal Services related questions.

GROUP VOLUNTEERING

Volunteer groups of up to 6 adults are needed throughout the year to help with basic shelter duties and special projects. This is a great opportunity for corporate, faith-based/civic and college groups to spend a few hours helping around the shelter. All individuals must be 18 and older. Groups must be between 3 - 6 adults. Learn more and submit a scheduling request here.

FOSTERING

Foster volunteers provide homes on a temporary basis for dogs and cats of all ages as they grow, heal and adjust behaviorally in preparation for finding their forever home. Animals may have temporary medical needs, mild behavioral concerns or are too young to be adopted. The care and socialization given during this time greatly increases cats and dog's chances for adoption. To learn more, visit the Foster Opportunity.

DONATIONS

Donations to the Plano Animal Services help provide for the "extras" that allow the staff and volunteers to make the animal's time in the shelter as pleasant as possible. Whether it's a soft bed or a tasty treat, your donation helps! All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. View the Animal Shelter Wish List [PDF] for top needs.
