The Volunteers in Plano (VIP) Teen Program engages 400 student volunteers to support Plano Parks and Recreation programs, Plano Public Library services, and special events.

Teen volunteers are between 13 and 18 years old. There is always a lengthy waiting list to join this popular teen volunteer program. The current waiting list has over 2,000 students.

2026 Update

The City of Plano teen volunteer waiting list has reached 2,031 students. We are leaving the waiting list open but all VIP Teens roster spots for 2026 are full. To join the waiting list, click the SIGN UP button at the top and fill out the application from the dropdown menu that says "I'm a Teen 13-17".

What opportunities are available to teens?

The majority of teen volunteer opportunities are through Volunteers in Plano (VIP) Teens. Annually, VIP Teens places 400+ student volunteers in roles at Parks and Recreation, Library locations and special events.

What ages can volunteer?

Specific age requirements depend on the opportunity or program. The youngest age is 13. For teen only programs, 18 year-olds must be enrolled in high school.

• VIP Teens: Ages 13 - 18 (minimum age varies based on opportunity)
• Adapted Recreation Programs: Ages 14+ (minimum age varies based on opportunity)
• Fire and Law Enforcement Explorers Programs: Ages 14 to 20
• Live Green in Plano: Ages 16+
• Plano Teen Court: Ages 14 - 18
• Teen Street Team through Plano Public Library: Ages 13 to 18

How do I create an account?

Click the SIGN UP button and select the "I'm a Teen (13-17)" application or use the teen application link. By creating an account, you'll automatically be added to the VIP Teens waiting list.

NOTE: Please make the date of birth is the TEEN'S BIRTHDATE. Entering the wrong year or the parent's date of birth results in account issues.

How do I apply for a specific program?

During account creation, you're prompted to select the specific programs that interest you. For most programs, openings are filled based on your application date and areas of interest.

Certain programs (i.e. Teen Street Team, Explorers) require specialized applications and vetting. Eligible and interested teens will receive additional information when those programs are accepting applications.

I need service hours ASAP. Where can I volunteer today?

We do not offer same-day volunteering. Most volunteer programs have a waiting list. If you are looking to finish hours quickly and stop volunteering, our programs are not the right fit for you.

I've applied. Now what?

As openings or application windows are available, you'll hear from VIP Staff. We'll also reach if there are one-off volunteers opportunities open to you, details about relevant non-volunteer opportunities, or volunteering through other organizations.  If we have any questions about your application, you'll hear from a VIP Staff member within a few days.
